Northumberland Fair is Fair Trade Group
The Northumberland Fair is Fair Trade Group registered as a not-for-profit in 2008 with the goal of opening a Ten Thousand Villages fair trade store in Northumberland County. After partnering with Ten Thousand Villages Canada, it has successfully operated a fair trade store in downtown Cobourg, ON since 2009. With the closure of Ten Thousand Villages Canada in 2020, the Cobourg store continues as an independent not-for-profit under the auspices of Ten Thousand Villages USA. As such, it is the last Ten Thousand Villages store in Eastern Canada.
In accordance with the organization's bylaws, its mission is to:
- operate an environmentally-responsible store in Northumberland County for the sale of handicrafts of a variety of artisans in developing nations on a cost-recovery basis.
- promote the enhancement of local understanding of the people and issues affecting developing countries, such as fair income and poverty, through seminars and exhibitions
In addition to oversight of the store, the organization also oversees the Rodger Henderson Memorial Scholarship for local high school students.
How do we celebrate our 15th year in business?! By doing more good, of course! Our core mission is to help disadvantaged artisans in developing countries through the payment of a fair wage...this is the heart of the fair trade philosophy.
So in planning our fifteenth anniversary celebrations, we decided to focus on a fundraiser that would support environmental goals both nationally and locally...especially in a year of the most devastating wildfires that our country has ever seen.
In order to plant 10,000 trees from Ten Thousand Villages, we are selling gift enclosure cards for $10 each. $10 will purchase four seedlings to be planted both in our local community (Northumberland County) through the Ganaraska Regional Conservation Authority, and nationally through the non-profit organization Tree Canada.
Customers who purchase a "Gift of Trees" purchased online will receive the gift enclosure card via email.
